CASE STUDY: CARMEN’S GROUP

Transforming a family business into a hospitality brand.

CHALLENGE

Carmen’s Group is a Hamilton based hospitality group operating an award-winning hotel, convention center, restaurant and multiple event spaces. With a headcount of over 240, the company had no previous HR department in place and was in a period of tremendous growth and internal change. Harper Resources was tasked with both building a human resources department from the ground up and acting as a strategic partner to transition the company from a family business into a high-performing, culture-driven organization.

OUTCOME

  • Guided the development of the company’s vision, mission and values statements.
  • Established a voice for the company’s culture and introduced engagement initiatives that added structure and reinforced company values.
  • Implemented a comprehensive organizational chart analysis and lead workshops to develop new roles in the business including: Director of Operations, Human Resources Manager, Chief Culinary Officer, Chief Financial Officer and Hotel General Manager.
  • Created opportunities for key team members to advance and hone their leadership skills, while bringing clarity and consistency to the way leadership potential is identified in the business and the process that goes into developing great leaders.
  • Created a process to address leadership succession planning and professional development.
  • Identified opportunities for new efficiencies and championed the introduction of new control mechanisms, communication methods and standardized operational processes in the business.
  • Championed a culture of health and safety, facilitating the development of four Joint Health and Safety Committees across four venues, a health and safety manual, staff training and tracking of all required certificates and signoffs, adding to the culture of accountability and ownership for your role and workspace.
